Blog and be part of a community 2021

I have not written on this blog for a long time. It needs updating. Let us begin.

It is still possible to blog online and be part of a community. You can, of course, create your own blog and monetise it. Then you can say what you want and have no site rules or conditions to follow.

However, it is nice to be part of a community, so below I list what still exists in 2021.  My aim is not so much to tell you where you will get paid for blogging, although some of these places claim to pay you when you reach a threshold, but to give an overview of where you can give yourself some exposure as a blogger. There may be better ways to make money than using these sites, but they are fun.

My favourite place is MyLot, which continues to pay the odd $5. This site works on the principle that to earn, you need to read, like and comment on what others write. It survived the demise of most other places like it, and is a friendly online community. However, longer or more serious posts may get overlooked.

HubPages remain stable. I don't know if people earn much there, but it is a place to write. People are writing on Tuetego. PersonaPaper does not pay, but you can still post there. Blogjob still exists. Vocal looks good. You can share your voice and earn cryptocurrency on Steemit. Then there is Medium, where you pay to upgrade for access to more. Wikinut still exists, but does not pay as far as I know.

How to use Grammar Checkers to Improve your Blog or Article

What is a grammar checker?

If you have a basic grasp of English, then this is an online tool that you can use to see if there are mistakes in your blog, essay or article. Used with care, these can greatly improve what you write and they will help you improve your writing skills.

Grammar checkers are not a human replacement

An online grammar checking tool will not take the place of a human editor who can read your writing in context. Use it a way to discover common mistakes and save time on copy editing. However, be careful. Consider every correction before you delete it. Stilted, wooden text that is a slave to the rules taught in a classroom is not good reading.

Every tool is different

Every Grammar Check tool available is different. They have varying strengths and weaknesses. Take a short article and put it through several programs. Make notes and you will spend less time making corrections on your articles next time as you identify common mistakes you make.

Where to find grammar checkers online

I have only included those you can use for free, even if a Premium version is available.

Hemmingway

Use Hemingway to remove complex sentences. Get rid of excessive adverbs and make your writing easy to read. You can write an article or story directly into the Hemmingway editor and some writers find this useful.

EditMinion

Editminion is fun. Paste your text into the editor. and "strunk" (whatever that is) when you press the edit button. It is easy to turn each feature on and off so that you can concentrate on one aspect of your writing.

Grammarly

Here is a tip. Install the free add-on for Grammarly in your web browser. You then have two checks working for you at the same time as it works inside the Online editors for other Grammar Checks. A useful free weekly email will tell you of frequent mistakes you make if you have a (free) account and it saves all the articles and stories you submit. This is useful if you forget to back your article up elsewhere.

PaperRater

Paperrater is better for academic work. Nice if you want to boost your confidence as it gives a projected grade.

AftertheDeadline

Use AftertheDeadline Online or install this as an add-on in your web browser or Libre Office. It might pick up something the other checks miss.

ProWritingAid

ProWritingAid gives a detailed analysis of your writing. I spend whole mornings learning how to perfect my articles on their website. Use the free version if you can’t afford the premium.

Autocrit

Autocrit helps fiction writers. Work with the free version to remove the words real-life editors hate to see. Then use it to examine your pacing.

SmartEdit

SmartEdit is no longer freeware, which is a shame. Try the free ten-day download. It only works with Windows so Mac Users and those on a Linux Operating System need to look elsewhere.

SlickWriter

SlickWriter works as a Libre Office add-on. It will work with Linux and Mac OS. A useful tool to have at your disposal.

Gregory’s Writing Site

Gregory’s is a useful Site run by Swedish lecturer who teaches English. It has a useful punctuation checker and good information for those who need to learn English Grammar.

Write a Great Blog Post

Your blog post is a reflection of you

Wherever you place your blog you want it to be great. Of course you do. After all, what you write is a reflection of who you are. Poor grammar and punctuation together with sloppy writing let you down. Let's explore the characteristics of a great blog post.

Grammar and punctuation matter

To write a good post, you need to accept that grammar and punctuation matter. You may think it is cute to use a small letter where a capital is needed, but this screams that you don't care about your readers. At least try to remember what they taught you at school. That is, sentences start with a capital letter and end with a full stop. I is always a capital.

Make the post an appropriate length

More than 600 words will help the search engines find you. However, six hundred words of drivel will not help anybody.

On the other hand, a few meaningless sentences will stop your readers returning no matter how wonderful your SEO skills are. Your aim should be to make your readers return as they are convinced you have something to say.

If you can't write well, keep things short

Start with 100 words and work up as your writing skills improve. Don't  add words for the sake of it. Short, well written posts will always look better to a reader than those that are rambling and poorly written.

Titles are easy

Write a short title that tells us what you are going to write about. Keep it short. Write it correctly so your readers think you know what you are doing.  Begin with a capital and end the Last word with a capital.

The title rule

It does not always work, but a rule to follow that helps is to give every word of four letters or over a capital at the start.

<strong>Titles are Easy</strong>

<strong>Writing Titles is Easy</strong>

<strong>Easy Title Writing for You</strong>

Here is a link to an article on <a href="http://grammar.yourdictionary.com/capitalization/rules-for-capitalization-in-titles.htmlhttp://">how to write titles </a>

Spending time reading that article and thinking about how you write may also improve your school or college marks as well!

Be Relevant

Keep asking yourself if what you are writing is relevant to the title. Use White

Use Space

It is really hard to read an article that is not broken up with a nice amount of white space between paragraphs. Leave a margin around your blog or article and make use of paragraphs.

Paragraphs are important

Make each paragraph within your headings no more that 3-5 sentences long. Each paragraph should contain only one point. A great blog post is easy to follow.

Spell correctly

Everyone I know, English or not, has trouble with spelling. It might seem fun not to bother, but bad spelling makes you look ignorant. Make sure you have the correct English for your context. "There" is not the same as "their," for example.

 Use a plagiarism check

It is always worth checking you have not accidentally included someone else's words. Sometimes we do this by accident. I once got half way through a poem I was writing and realised I was recreating something someone else had written.

Never ever copy and past someone else's blog of article. It is stealing. Also, Google likes original content and you want to get into the search engines,

Add a picture

An original picture or illustrations adds interest to what you write.

Finally read out loud

Read your work back out loud. Does what you have written make sense?

Ask yourself

Look at what you are about to post. Ask yourself if you were a reader, would you say, "this is a great blog post?"

Writing Jumpers

Why I called this article “Writing Jumpers”

When we write we can liken the process to the jumpers in our wardrobe. We will have cheaper, every day jumpers, expensive jumpers for best, and maybe a few that have been hand knitted of variable quality and use.

The cheap market stall jumper

Most of us will have written some  quick blog type posts. These are akin to a diary entry. They don't say anything of lasting value. It might just be something like "Hi guys, here is the new day. Let's do something amazing with it. I am  having toast for breakfast on the veranda."

It is easy enough to tell the world you have had tea and toast for breakfast and you may well do it well. However, the information is of passing interest.

It is a bit like going to the market and buying a cheap jumper. It does the job. It may not last long, but it may be around in your wardrobe for a while.

Sometimes you get a real bargain and the cheap jumper turns out to be very useful because for some reason that short comment earns you more than you expected.

In the same way, a short post, knocked up in haste for a “writer’s website,” may very occasionally do you proud. However, most will be quickly forgotten and discarded unless you take them out of the wardrobe and do something with them.

Recycling the jumper

A cheap jumper can be turned into an expensive looking one if you put some effort in. The sleeves might need to be longer, you might make cuffs, you might put a bit of your best embroidery round the edges and in the end, your cheap jumper or rather your quick post might turn into something else.

You expand on the information you originally gave and drop the chat. Your next post is about ideas for special breakfasts on the veranda and includes your recipe for marmalade. The post becomes useful in a different venue because it is now relevant to a cookery blog.

This is not by the way, the same as article spinning because you take your initial idea and work on it to create a longer and better article. Your finished product should bear no resemblance to the quick short post you originally made.

Your original thought is a starting point for a better article.

Some of the things we right have a lot of mileage. We can become specialists in the topic. They are your like the jumper you wear most days.

The Everyday Writing Jumper

Somewhere in your wardrobe you probably have two or three jumpers that you wear over and over again. They are your every day, useful jumpers. When you write there are probably topics that you find you can return to to make reasonable length posts and articles.

For example, I write about Christianity a lot (though mainly on my own blogs) and childcare and the cat. These are topics I actually know something about. I can come at them from lots of different angles and produce good articles in a short space of time because I have a knowledge base to work from.

When you have time to work on an article you might turn your attention to something that requires more research and detail. It isn't easy to do that every day so you save this for when you can put out your very best efforts. That is like wearing the best jumper in your wardrobe for a special occassion.

Very best writing jumpers

The very best writing you do will be like your very best jumper. You will want to keep and treasure it and it will be of lasting value.

You cannot knit your best jumper while you are still learning

I once learned to knit. My first efforts were not great, but I persevered and as I improved I was finally able to make a very complicated jumper.

Don't lost your best jumpers

I was proud of that jumper and wore it, and basked in the admiration of those who saw it. I loved that shawl and it lasted a long time. I think it is still in my wardrobe somewhere. I may get it out again this Summer. The same may be said of your best blogs or articles. Remember:

There is no harm in republishing links to a good post.

There is a skill to writing and to creating jumpers

Learning to write is a skill that improves over time. The best things you write, the ones that will last, are likely to be the articles that you spend time on, allowing yourself to include the advice you are given on how to make your writing the very best it can be.

Recycling a jumper is like re-editing

You may have to unravel your beloved piece over and over again until it is right, you allow people to point out where the stitches have been dropped, (these people are called editors,) and you are willing to spend the time to make that article as perfect as it can be. You do the same when you learn to knit. You unravel that jumper, if you go wrong, until it is as well made as you can get it.

You can take your best writing jumper to the fashion show

This is the article you can parade like your best jumper. It is the one you refer to (or hopefully more than one,) when someone asks you what you write. It is the evening best jumper of the writing world. The jumper with all the pearls and sequins and glitter on that you would love wear for everyday, but you cannot because you have to take care of the jumper and put it in all the right places.

Be patient and wait for the right place to place this kind of writing jumper. It is too valuable to give away. Search diligently for the best place to keep it because you know that you have worked hard and have something of value to show off to the world. In other words, send that one to the publisher and hope to see it in print.

The good thing about making a best writing jumper

When you create your best writing jumper and take care of it, then you have probably also created your best learning tool for writing all those other lesser writing jumpers. You will find even your short blog posts improve because you have worked to become not just a writer of blogs, but a writer who knows their craft. It is worth taking the time to learn how to make the best articles because what you write, even quick posts will be improved.

I challenge you to learn to write a best writing jumper

Yes, it will take time to write that best writing jumper. You will find you cannot do things you have always done and that there is a way to write things. You may have to think more about grammar, spelling, form, style and all sorts of things that you have never bothered much about, but you will be so glad when you see yourself in print that you gave time to the learning process and the end result will, like my very best shawl, be admired.

Are you up to the Writing Jumper Challenge?

If you are up for the challenge, here is something to get your teeth into: George Orwell’s Guide to Writing Well
Are you up for the challenge. You might spend the time learning how to knit, but are you up to the challenge of creating a best writing jumper, or preferably a lot of extremely well written articles?

Get Paid to Write Blogs and Articles

What is a "Paid to Write" site?

This blog talks about places you can write and earn something for doing so. Generally, they are called "Paid to Write" sites. None of them will earn you a fortune, however you may get a small addition to your monthly income. The advantage is that you get to choose your own subject matter and write what you want. As sites where you get paid to write come and go quickly, this page will be updated from time to time.

What do I write?

Blog posts or articles of your own creation. There is often a minimum word count.

Will I get paid?

I cannot guarantee any place will pay you. For that reason, I recommend you cash out the moment you reach a minimum payment. These sites come and go fast. They can be good, but none will make your fortune.

Do I need to be a great writer?

No you do not.

The standard of writing on each site varies. You will need to decide for yourself where you wish to write. Most sites are blog sites and many writers have limited English.

This is good, but if you are a serious writer then you need to be discerning as to where you write and share your blogs and articles.

How do I get people to read my work?

If you work at it, you can create your own network of people who write to your standard by interacting with those people. Interaction is key on all these sites, so it is worth spending time making friendships and commenting on what others write.

In addition to this you can share posts onto social networks you are on. Do this for yourself and other people you enjoy reading.

Make friends who will follow you to other sites. That way you will still be reading each other if your blogging or writing site of choice fails.

Active places where you can get paid to write a blog post or article 7/4/2017

Please feel free to add to this list by commenting on this blog. Sites come and go at a fast rate.

Hubpages
Wizzley
Writedge requires you to use adsense
LiteracyBase is paying
Tuetego is a new kid on the block and quite interesting. However I find the site hard to negotiate.
Niume ia another fairly new site. It is good, but there are reports of people finding it hard to reach the earning threshold.

Persona Paper no longer pays. It may do so eventually
Blogjob still exists, but again the payments are suspended.

MyLot is not the best place for an article, but if you just like to write and chat it is good.

Doing it all by yourself

You can, of course, do as I am doing here and write and publish your own posts on Blogger or set up a Wordpress blog. However that means missing out on a sense of community and making friends.

Writing sites that are now extinct

MyKites
Bubblews ripped people off and disappeared.
Triond has now gone
Wikinut has now gone
Mykites is currently giving an error 404 message so may no longer exist
EliteVisitors seems to have gone
Milk the Blog has gone
CPG Gallery proved another rip off sit
PostanyArticle has gone
Squidoo migrated into Hubpages long ago

Always check out terms and conditions

Finally, wherever you write make sure that you check out the terms and conditions of the site so that you don't breach them. Paid to Write Sites often say they can stop paying at any time and may want to take your copyright for both the written word and pictures you use. If you want to be paid to write as a professional writer then these sites are not the best place for you.

Beware you online writers

You are not being paid to write

All these online sites where you are paid to write use advertising. That is how they get their revenue.  None of them actually pay anyone for writing at all.

It is views of the webpage that count

No matter how good or bad you are at writing, the end result will be the same. You will get paid because you got views. With each and every view comes some sort of advertising.

Advertisers want views

Now, think about it. Advertisers want views, not of your article, but of the advert for the product they are selling and they want you to see it over and over again so that when you need what it is they have to offer or sell, you think of them. They only need a place to get people to to look at the advert.

Google cannot read

As long as Google likes it and you managed some basic SEO then really, you could write about anything and badly and still earn.

Let's recap

Writers think they are getting their writing seen,  so they are happy to create pages not realising the pages are really for the benefit of the advertisers. The advertisers are happy to pay the website owners. Someone is getting paid, but not you for your online writing. You are paid because an advert appears alongside what you wrote.

So why would we bother

Some of us may be happy, as at least our writing gets seen, Other people on a site may read what we wrote, but why should you be profiting the website owners without having a decent cut of that revenue?

My eyes were opened when I realised that an article of mine had thousands of views, but had made less than a single dollar.

The answer?

Sites that pay you to post your blogs are good for making friends, but a blog you own with its own following is superior in all ways. Whatever we do, we should all aim for that,

Beware you online writers and make sure you too get a cut of the profits!

Procrastination and Confidence are the Thief of any Writer

A procrastinating perfectionist

I have a big fault. I procrastinate. I also have a bigger fault than that. I am a perfectionist. These two things are  my enemy when I write. Procrastination and lack of confidence are the thief of any writer. However it is not writing itself that is my problem.

Editing is my problem

Words flow easily. I do not have a problem with words. My laptop is full of books and chapters of books and articles. It is getting them into an edited state and formatted correctly that is the thing I put off time and time again. My perfectionism works against me. I lack the confidence to believe my writing is ready to be seen.

I am imperfect

I write, I think of publishing and then I wait. I am sure my article is imperfect. That's why I leave the writing to stagnate inside a document on my laptop and hide away in  day dreams. I dream of being a great writer, I cannot be unless I actually get my work out  into the world.

Just like every other writer

I realise every time I pick up a book in a bookshop that even established publishers cannot get every part of a book perfect. So why should I hold back? It is better to publish and be dammed surely, than never to publish at all. It is time I lost my attitude.

Because

Yet here I am, today was "the day," to finish and publish an e book, but I am not satisfied yet. I will just rewrite, reformat, leave it a while and have a cup of tea.

One day I will be famous, but not if I keep the attitude towards my writing It is time to be published an probably not dammed after all.

Finding your Voice as a Writer

Did you know that as a writer you will have a 'voice?' Think of it like this. When we hear someone talk we can often identify them by the way they speak. We know we have heard 'so and so.'

We speak naturally and can sometimes alter our voice for circumstances. My children tell me I have a 'telephone' voice. I start speaking in a posh way that isn't how I normally sound. People might also have fun trying to speak in a different accent although it is usually possible to see they are acting unless they are professional actors.

Your writing will also have a feel to it that is distinctly yours. You will eventually write in a way that suits your personality and also the content of the article you are writing. However, this may not come to us as naturally as speaking.

Finding your writer's voice takes time and making sure you keep it for at least the length of an article is harder. It will be a style of writing that is unique to you and the things you put into print. You will need to take time to see which style suits your personality and temperament and eventually come to recognise this as your own.

When you have found your voice you might still alter it for different types of articles just as I alter my voice (and you probably do too,) on the telephone.

Some people say that the writer's voice comes naturally. I think this is true to some extent, but once you know what makes your writing distinctive you can alter it to suit the occasion. However, when you do that you will need to be careful as your natural voice will tend to try and break through and you may end up with a poor article because you have used two or more styles of writing.

Always check your article remains in the same voice unless you have a genuine reason for altering the style that actually enhances what you have to say.

The best way to find out what your voice is is to indulge in some free flow writing and then examine the style within the piece you have created.

How Long Should An Article Be?

There comes a point where a long article becomes a book.

People tend to be in a hurry and when read on the Internet. They may not stay very long on your particular page. Therefore, what you write has to be very relevant and short enough to make the person stay on the page long enough to read it.

The Pros and Cons of Writing Articles Online

There are pros and cons of writing online. If you want to write an article about anything at all then there will be somewhere to get that article online and seen. This is possible if you are good at writing and it is possible if you are not. It always surprises me that people with very little skill in the way of grammar or punctuation still manage to make a living from the printed word.

The difficulty arises when people of varying skills use the same platform to write their articles. Online writing sites are a great way of making yourself known and practising your writing skills, but they also mean you are linked to people who do not write so well. Does this matter? I don't think so.

Whoever you are, and wherever you write there is the possibility of building up your own following. If people know your articles will appear regularly in a certain place hen they will hopefully look for them anyway. This is a great plus. For example, I write a regular "Catblog" where I am the ghost writer for my real cat. It is a regular feature of one online writing site, but friends and relations are now beginning to access it as are facebook and twitter contacts. It really doesn't matter what others are writing as people who really want to see what I, personally, have written go to MY article. I will confess. That one is a money earner. The cat, yes, my real cat, as I base the Catblog on what it actually does, earns its own catfood. I earn more from the Catblog than anything else. People like cats and I like writing.

I don't despise others who write on the site I use (Bubblews in this case,) because I think it is a good thing for people to write, Some will, through feeling safe on a site with a lower standard of grammar, start to realise and hone their writing skills. People use such sites to try out novels and all sorts of things. Along the way, they may also pick up the necessary grammatical skills and learn what people want to read. The comments on a post are going to be a good gauge of that!at

These blogs, wherever they are written are good for publicising other things you have written. Look at the top of the page. I once wrote a book of poems. That book is for sale. I have put a picture here. If you read this free blog, which of course I have linked to other things, you just might want to look at my book. I may even make sales. That is another pro. You see, if you link your other blogs to whatever or wherever you  also write people who like what they read may then start to click on the links. They get to your other blogs and then hopefully to the book you started off writing online but then took offline and changed into a book and then uploaded to sell. I am working on the first edition of the Catblog now as I think it will be popular. My online blogs are the rough draft to see what works and what doesn't.

The cons are possibly getting less as online writing or blogging becomes popular. It used to be the case that an online article written for a writing site was seen as less than good by traditional publishers, but now we have the success of so many self published writers and independent blogs to make the point that it is  not where you write, but what you write is important. My guess is that traditional publishers have now realised the original disdain for the online blogger or writer must give way to practical common sense.

I give these online sites a big thumb up. We are becoming nations of writers thanks to the ability to have free online blogs.
